Marriage in the past and today
Before the nineteenth century, families usually arranged marriages for their children.
Young people did not decide whom they wanted to marry. After they got married, they usually had a lot of children. This type of family was an important part of a larger family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, grandparents and other relatives.
Today the situation has changed. Most young people can now choose whom they want to marry. Marriage today joins two people together and not two families. People are not forced to get married. They marry because they love each other.
However there are still many problems. Some parents want their children to follow their way and this creates a conflict of generations.
